Feed the Brain, Calm the Mind – Small habits that help students stay focused before exams

There is something I notice every year before exams. Children begin to study harder and harder… but at the same time, they begin to forget how to take care of themselves.

❤️They sleep less.

💙They drink less water.

💛They panic more.

💚They skip meals.

And slowly, their tired brain starts whispering: “I can’t remember anything.” But memory is not only about intelligence. The brain is part of the body. And when the body is exhausted, stressed, dehydrated or overwhelmed, concentration becomes harder and harder.

That is why, before exams, students need more than books. They need routines, calmness, sleep, movement, hydration and food that gives stable energy to the brain.

Foods that help the brain stay steady

Some foods can help students maintain more stable energy and concentration throughout the day.

🥚 Eggs

Rich in protein and nutrients that support brain function.

🍌 Bananas

Provide energy without the sudden “crash” caused by too much sugar.

🥜 Nuts

A small handful of almonds or walnuts can help students feel fuller and more focused.

🥣 Yogurt & oats

A calming and balanced snack that supports stable energy levels.

🐟 Fish

Contains healthy fats important for brain health.

💧 Water

One of the most underestimated “study tools.” Even mild dehydration can affect concentration and memory.

And maybe most importantly: students do not need perfect diets. They need CONSISTENCY.

A small rosemary ritual

This year, I decided to give my students a tiny dried rosemary bundle tied with string. Not because rosemary is magic and not because it suddenly creates perfect memory. But because humans remember through rituals, emotions and atmosphere.

For centuries, Rosemary has been connected symbolically with remembrance, focus and learning. Even ancient scholars associated its scent with clarity and memory.

Today, some small studies suggest that its aroma may help people feel more alert and focused. But beyond science, there is also something emotional about it: a calming smell, a familiar object, a quiet ritual before studying.

Sometimes children simply need something that reminds them:

breathe, slow down, you are safe, you can do this.

The brain needs rest, too. Many students believe that success means:

✔️sleeping less,

✔️studying all night,

✔️drinking endless coffee,

✔️and pushing themselves to exhaustion.

But a tired brain struggles to store information. Very often, a child remembers more after good sleep than after three extra hours of anxious studying. The goal is not panic. The goal is steady learning.

What students truly need before exams

🎯Sleep

🎯Water

🎯Healthy meals

🎯Small breaks

🎯Encouragement

🎯Calm environments

🎯Belief in themselves

🎯And maybe… a small rosemary bundle on their desk 🌿

Don’t forget to breathe, rest, and believe in yourself.
